Snuff box, made of tortoise shell with a micromosaic representing the Colosseum mounted in a gold frame.

The micromoasic is made with very small glass stones (tesserae), typical for the early mosaics of around 1800. The flavian amphitheatre was build in the 1st century AD and became known as the Colosseum, named after the huge statue of Nero, the Colossos, that stood beside the theatre. Micromosaic were bought by travelers on their Grand Tour in Rome.
